Introduction of Nitrosamines
Nitrosamines,first described in chemical literaturemore than a century ago,started receiving attentionfollowing two episodes,first y with the discovery in1956bytwo United Kingdom scientists, David Barnesand Peter Magee,over the carcinogenic effect ofN-nitroso dimethylamine(NDMA) in experimentalanimals.
Then in the early 1960sin Norway,NDMAwas identified as the cause in the death of agriculturalanimals which had been fed nitrite-preserved fishmeal .1.
The nitrite had reacted with amines in the fishmealwhere lethal amounts of NDMA were produced.
