Antioxidants and Degradation Products

As an important additive, antioxidants arewidely used in polymers.A series of degradation products isgenerated when they exert their anti oxidation activity.

Theseantioxidants and degradation products show potential risk ofmigration from these polymeric materials to pharmaceuticalproducts during their contact, which make them concerningfocus in the compatibility study of pharmaceutical packagingand manufacturing system with drugs. In this paper,

The mainantioxidants used in plastics and elastomers are classifiedaccording to their structures and functions, and the anti-oxidation mechanism of chain-breaking and peroxides-decomposing is detailed.

The origin and generationmechanism of common degradation products 3-(3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid,2,4-di-tert-butyl phenol,2,6-di-tert-butyl benzoquinone,3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde and methyl 3-(3, 5-di-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate,2,6-di-tert-butyl benzoquinonemet hide and dimeric by products are reviewed.

The detectionmethods of these degradation products, especially thequalitative application of GC-MS,are described. The wholereview serves as a reference for the study of antioxidantsand their degradation products in simulated extractionand migration study of compatibility research regardingpharmaceutical plastics and elastomers.
